SUMMARY:Book Club @ The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Sparring Partners by John Grisham \n#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham is the acknowledged master of the legal thriller. In his first collection of novellas\, law is a common thread\, but America’s favorite storyteller has several surprises in store. \n“Homecoming” takes us back to Ford County\, the fictional setting of many of John Grisham’s unforgettable stories. Jake Brigance is back\, but he’s not in the courtroom. He’s called upon to help an old friend\, Mack Stafford\, a former lawyer in Clanton\, who three years earlier became a local legend when he stole money from his clients\, divorced his wife\, filed for bankruptcy\, and left his family in the middle of the night\, never to be heard from again—until now. Now Mack is back\, and he’s leaning on his old pals\, Jake and Harry Rex\, to help him return. His homecoming does not go as planned. \nIn “Strawberry Moon\,” we meet Cody Wallace\, a young death row inmate only three hours away from execution. His lawyers can’t save him\, the courts slam the door\, and the governor says no to a last-minute request for clemency. As the clock winds down\, Cody has one final request. \nThe “Sparring Partners” are the Malloy brothers\, Kirk and Rusty\, two successful young lawyers who inherited a once prosperous firm when its founder\, their father\, was sent to prison. Kirk and Rusty loathe each other\, and speak to each other only when necessary. As the firm disintegrates\, the resulting fiasco falls into the lap of Diantha Bradshaw\, the only person the partners trust. Can she save the Malloys\, or does she take a stand for the first time in her career and try to save herself? \nBy turns suspenseful\, hilarious\, powerful\, and moving\, these are three of the greatest stories John Grisham has ever told. \nSparring Partners is book #4 in Jake Brigance series \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:CLSC Book Club
DESCRIPTION:CLSC BOOK CLUB \nThe Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle is the oldest book club in the US. \nThis book club will meet in person at 3 Lakes Cafe (located on Main Street in Cassadaga) to discuss books from the CLSC book list. \n  \nMay’s Book Selection is The Queens of Crime: A Novel  by Marie Benedict \nThe New York Times bestselling author of The Mystery of Mrs. Christie returns with a thrilling story of Christie’s legendary rival Dorothy Sayers\, the race to solve a murder\, and the power of friendship among women. \nLondon\, 1930. The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second-class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy L. Sayers\, the group includes Agatha Christie\, Ngaio Marsh\, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan? Solve an actual murder\, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France who may have connections leading to the highest levels of the British establishment. \nMay Daniels\, a young English nurse on an excursion to France with her friend\, seemed to vanish into thin air as they prepared to board a ferry home. Months later\, her body is found in the nearby woods. The murder has all the hallmarks of a locked room mystery for which these authors are famous: how did her killer manage to sneak her body out of a crowded train station without anyone noticing? If\, as the police believe\, the cause of death is manual strangulation\, why is there is an extraordinary amount of blood at the crime scene? What is the meaning of a heartbreaking secret letter seeming to implicate an unnamed paramour? Determined to solve the highly publicized murder\, the Queens of Crime embark on their own investigation\, discovering they’re stronger together. But soon the killer targets Dorothy Sayers herself\, threatening to expose a dark secret in her past that she would do anything to keep hidden. \nInspired by a true story in Sayers’ own life\, New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict brings to life the lengths to which five talented women writers will go to be taken seriously in the male-dominated world of letters as they unpuzzle a mystery torn from the pages of their own novels. \n  \nHosted by Erin Gray in partnership with the Sinclairville Free Library. Copies are available for checkout through the library’s hold process. \nFor more information on CLSC. \n

SUMMARY:Book Club @ The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger \nIn the summer of 1932\, on the banks of Minnesota’s Gilead River\, the Lincoln Indian Training School is a pitiless place where Native American children\, forcibly separated from their parents\, are sent to be educated. It is also home to Odie O’Banion\, a lively orphan boy whose exploits constantly earn him the superintendent’s wrath. Odie and his brother\, Albert\, are the only white faces among the hundreds of Native American children at the school. \nAfter committing a terrible crime\, Odie and Albert are forced to flee for their lives along with their best friend\, Mose\, a mute young man of Sioux heritage. Out of pity\, they also take with them a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy. Together\, they steal away in a canoe\, heading for the mighty Mississippi in search for a place to call home. \nOver the course of one unforgettable summer\, these four orphan vagabonds journey into the unknown\, crossing paths with others who are adrift\, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. SUMMARY:Book Club @ The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher \nArtist’s daughter Penelope Keeling can look back on a full and varied life: a Bohemian childhood in London and Cornwall\, an unhappy wartime marriage\, and the one man she truly loved. She has brought up three children – and learned to accept them as they are. Yet she is far too energetic and independent to settle sweetly into pensioned-off old-age. And when she discovers that her most treasured possession\, her father’s painting\, The Shell Seekers\, is now worth a small fortune\, it is Penelope who must make the decisions that will determine whether her family can continue to survive as a family\, or be split apart. \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:Books Unlimited Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Switchboard Soldiers by Jennifer Chiaverini \nFrom New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini\, a bold\, revelatory novel about one of the great untold stories of World War I—the women of the U.S. Army Signal Corps\, who broke down gender barriers in the military and battled a pandemic as they helped lead the Allies to victory.  \n“An eye-opening and detailed novel about remarkable female soldiers. . . Chiaverini weaves the intersecting threads of these brave women’s lives together\, highlighting their deep sense of pride and duty.”—Kirkus Reviews \n In June 1917\, General John Pershing arrived in France to establish American forces in Europe. He immediately found himself unable to communicate with troops in the field. Pershing needed telephone operators who could swiftly and accurately connect multiple calls\, speak fluent French and English\, remain steady under fire\, and be utterly discreet\, since the calls often conveyed classified information. \nAt the time\, nearly all well-trained American telephone operators were women—but women were not permitted to enlist\, or even to vote in most states. Nevertheless\, the U.S. Army Signal Corps promptly began recruiting them. \nMore than 7\,600 women responded\, including Grace Banker of New Jersey\, a switchboard instructor with AT&T and an alumna of Barnard College; Marie Miossec\, a Frenchwoman and aspiring opera singer; and Valerie DeSmedt\, a twenty-year-old Pacific Telephone operator from Los Angeles\, determined to strike a blow for her native Belgium. \nThey were among the first women sworn into the U.S. Army under the Articles of War. The male soldiers they had replaced had needed one minute to connect each call. The switchboard soldiers could do it in ten seconds. \nDeployed throughout France\, including near the front lines\, the operators endured hardships and risked death or injury from gunfire\, bombardments\, and the Spanish Flu. Not all of them would survive. \nThe women of the U.S. Army Signal Corps served with honor and played an essential role in achieving the Allied victory. Their story has never been the focus of a novel…until now. \n  \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required.
