SUMMARY:Local Author Visit: Walt Pickut
DESCRIPTION:Walt Pickut\, author of The First Counterspy\, a book with local connections. \nThis is a “pulse-quickening and traumatic story of spy and counterspy and an American family unwittingly caught in their web.” \nUntil this case\, the FBI had never recruited civilian counterspies to catch a Soviet agent. The first two were Larry Haas\, a leading aviation engineer at Bell Aviation\, and Leona Franey\, head librarian at Bell’s technical library. The FBI pitted them against a Soviet agent\, Andrei Ivanovich Schevchenko\, operating legally as one of the highest Soviet officials in the United States during WWII\, and illegally as the secret head of a wide-ranging spy network hidden within the American aviation industry. \nThe First Counterspy lays out this exciting story and\, later\, the consequences of Schevchenko’s deadly threat of vengeance against Haas\, the counterspy who betrayed him. The threat was uttered in a mere fourteen seconds but generated lethal consequences that long outlived Schevchenko\, tormented Larry Haas\, killed his wife\, and subjected his daughter\, Kay (the co-author of this book)\, to decades of nearly fatal harassment. \nAnd thereby hangs a tale of spy vs. spy intrigue against the backdrop of the home front during World War II.

SUMMARY:Books Unlimited Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Women by Kristin Hannah \nFrom the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah’s The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided. \nWomen can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words\, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched\, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents\, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965\, the world is changing\, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam\, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. \nAs green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight\, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death\, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war\, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky\, the brave\, the broken\, and the lost. \nBut war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America\, to angry protesters\, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam. \nThe Women is the story of one woman gone to war\, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism\, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era. \n  \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required.

SUMMARY:Virtual Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Light and Air by Mindy Nichols Wendell \nIt’s 1935\, and tuberculosis is ravaging the nation. Everyone is afraid of this deadly respiratory illness. But what happens when you actually have it? \nWhen Halle and her mother both come down with TB\, they are shunned—and then they are sent to the J.N. Adam Tuberculosis Hospital: far from home\, far from family\, far from the world. \nTucked away in the woods of upstate New York\, the hospital is a closed and quiet place. But it is not\, Halle learns\, a prison. Free of her worried and difficult father for the first time in her life\, she slowly discovers joy\, family\, and the healing power of honey on the children’s ward\, where the girls on the floor become her confidantes and sisters. But when Mama suffers a lung hemorrhage\, their entire future—and recovery—is thrown into question…. \nLight and Air deals tenderly and insightfully with isolation\, quarantine\, found family\, and illness. Set in the fully realized world of a 1930s hospital\, it offers a tender glimpse into a historical epidemic that has become more relatable than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As Halle tries to warm her father’s coldness and learns to trust the girls and women of the hospital\, and as she and her mother battle a disease that once paralyzed the country\, a profound message of strength\, hope\, and healing emerges. \nA Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection \nAUTHOR BIO: \nMindy Nichols Wendell writes middle grade historical fiction. SUMMARY:Virtual Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict \nThe New York Times bestselling author of The Mystery of Mrs. Christie returns with a thrilling story of Christie’s legendary rival Dorothy Sayers\, the race to solve a murder\, and the power of friendship among women. \nLondon\, 1930. The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second-class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy L. Sayers\, the group includes Agatha Christie\, Ngaio Marsh\, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan? Solve an actual murder\, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France who may have connections leading to the highest levels of the British establishment. \nMay Daniels\, a young English nurse on an excursion to France with her friend\, seemed to vanish into thin air as they prepared to board a ferry home. Months later\, her body is found in the nearby woods. The murder has all the hallmarks of a locked room mystery for which these authors are famous: how did her killer manage to sneak her body out of a crowded train station without anyone noticing? If\, as the police believe\, the cause of death is manual strangulation\, why is there is an extraordinary amount of blood at the crime scene? SUMMARY:Book Club @ The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Sparring Partners by John Grisham \n#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham is the acknowledged master of the legal thriller. In his first collection of novellas\, law is a common thread\, but America’s favorite storyteller has several surprises in store. \n“Homecoming” takes us back to Ford County\, the fictional setting of many of John Grisham’s unforgettable stories. Jake Brigance is back\, but he’s not in the courtroom. He’s called upon to help an old friend\, Mack Stafford\, a former lawyer in Clanton\, who three years earlier became a local legend when he stole money from his clients\, divorced his wife\, filed for bankruptcy\, and left his family in the middle of the night\, never to be heard from again—until now. Now Mack is back\, and he’s leaning on his old pals\, Jake and Harry Rex\, to help him return. His homecoming does not go as planned. \nIn “Strawberry Moon\,” we meet Cody Wallace\, a young death row inmate only three hours away from execution. His lawyers can’t save him\, the courts slam the door\, and the governor says no to a last-minute request for clemency. As the clock winds down\, Cody has one final request. \nThe “Sparring Partners” are the Malloy brothers\, Kirk and Rusty\, two successful young lawyers who inherited a once prosperous firm when its founder\, their father\, was sent to prison. Kirk and Rusty loathe each other\, and speak to each other only when necessary. As the firm disintegrates\, the resulting fiasco falls into the lap of Diantha Bradshaw\, the only person the partners trust. Can she save the Malloys\, or does she take a stand for the first time in her career and try to save herself? \nBy turns suspenseful\, hilarious\, powerful\, and moving\, these are three of the greatest stories John Grisham has ever told. \nSparring Partners is book #4 in Jake Brigance series \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:CLSC Book Club
DESCRIPTION:CLSC BOOK CLUB \nThe Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle is the oldest book club in the US. \nThis book club will meet in person at 3 Lakes Cafe (located on Main Street in Cassadaga) to discuss books from the CLSC book list. \n  \nMay’s Book Selection is The Queens of Crime: A Novel  by Marie Benedict \nThe New York Times bestselling author of The Mystery of Mrs. What is the meaning of a heartbreaking secret letter seeming to implicate an unnamed paramour? Determined to solve the highly publicized murder\, the Queens of Crime embark on their own investigation\, discovering they’re stronger together. But soon the killer targets Dorothy Sayers herself\, threatening to expose a dark secret in her past that she would do anything to keep hidden. \nInspired by a true story in Sayers’ own life\, New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict brings to life the lengths to which five talented women writers will go to be taken seriously in the male-dominated world of letters as they unpuzzle a mystery torn from the pages of their own novels. \n  \nHosted by Erin Gray in partnership with the Sinclairville Free Library. Copies are available for checkout through the library’s hold process. \nFor more information on CLSC. \n
