SUMMARY:Virtual Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict \nThe New York Times bestselling author of The Mystery of Mrs. Christie returns with a thrilling story of Christie’s legendary rival Dorothy Sayers\, the race to solve a murder\, and the power of friendship among women. \nLondon\, 1930. The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second-class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy L. Sayers\, the group includes Agatha Christie\, Ngaio Marsh\, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan? Solve an actual murder\, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France who may have connections leading to the highest levels of the British establishment. \nMay Daniels\, a young English nurse on an excursion to France with her friend\, seemed to vanish into thin air as they prepared to board a ferry home. Months later\, her body is found in the nearby woods. The murder has all the hallmarks of a locked room mystery for which these authors are famous: how did her killer manage to sneak her body out of a crowded train station without anyone noticing? If\, as the police believe\, the cause of death is manual strangulation\, why is there is an extraordinary amount of blood at the crime scene? What is the meaning of a heartbreaking secret letter seeming to implicate an unnamed paramour? Determined to solve the highly publicized murder\, the Queens of Crime embark on their own investigation\, discovering they’re stronger together. But soon the killer targets Dorothy Sayers herself\, threatening to expose a dark secret in her past that she would do anything to keep hidden. \nInspired by a true story in Sayers’ own life\, New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict brings to life the lengths to which five talented women writers will go to be taken seriously in the male-dominated world of letters as they unpuzzle a mystery torn from the pages of their own novels. \n  \nRegister using the Event & Program Registration. \nYou can request a copy be reserved during registration. DESCRIPTION:Light and Air by Mindy Nichols Wendell \nIt’s 1935\, and tuberculosis is ravaging the nation. Everyone is afraid of this deadly respiratory illness. But what happens when you actually have it? \nWhen Halle and her mother both come down with TB\, they are shunned—and then they are sent to the J.N. Adam Tuberculosis Hospital: far from home\, far from family\, far from the world. \nTucked away in the woods of upstate New York\, the hospital is a closed and quiet place. But it is not\, Halle learns\, a prison. Free of her worried and difficult father for the first time in her life\, she slowly discovers joy\, family\, and the healing power of honey on the children’s ward\, where the girls on the floor become her confidantes and sisters. But when Mama suffers a lung hemorrhage\, their entire future—and recovery—is thrown into question…. \nLight and Air deals tenderly and insightfully with isolation\, quarantine\, found family\, and illness. Set in the fully realized world of a 1930s hospital\, it offers a tender glimpse into a historical epidemic that has become more relatable than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As Halle tries to warm her father’s coldness and learns to trust the girls and women of the hospital\, and as she and her mother battle a disease that once paralyzed the country\, a profound message of strength\, hope\, and healing emerges. \nA Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection \nAUTHOR BIO: \nMindy Nichols Wendell writes middle grade historical fiction. SUMMARY:Books Unlimited Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Women by Kristin Hannah \nFrom the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah’s The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided. \nWomen can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words\, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched\, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents\, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965\, the world is changing\, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam\, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. \nAs green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight\, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death\, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war\, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky\, the brave\, the broken\, and the lost. \nBut war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America\, to angry protesters\, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam. \nThe Women is the story of one woman gone to war\, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism\, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era. \n  \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required.

SUMMARY:Local Author Visit: Walt Pickut
DESCRIPTION:Walt Pickut\, author of The First Counterspy\, a book with local connections. \nThis is a “pulse-quickening and traumatic story of spy and counterspy and an American family unwittingly caught in their web.” \nUntil this case\, the FBI had never recruited civilian counterspies to catch a Soviet agent. The first two were Larry Haas\, a leading aviation engineer at Bell Aviation\, and Leona Franey\, head librarian at Bell’s technical library. The FBI pitted them against a Soviet agent\, Andrei Ivanovich Schevchenko\, operating legally as one of the highest Soviet officials in the United States during WWII\, and illegally as the secret head of a wide-ranging spy network hidden within the American aviation industry. \nThe First Counterspy lays out this exciting story and\, later\, the consequences of Schevchenko’s deadly threat of vengeance against Haas\, the counterspy who betrayed him. The threat was uttered in a mere fourteen seconds but generated lethal consequences that long outlived Schevchenko\, tormented Larry Haas\, killed his wife\, and subjected his daughter\, Kay (the co-author of this book)\, to decades of nearly fatal harassment. \nAnd thereby hangs a tale of spy vs. spy intrigue against the backdrop of the home front during World War II.

SUMMARY:Book Club @ The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:A Christmas Duet by Debbie Macomber \nA solo holiday trip inspires one woman to rediscover her passion—and remember that\, sometimes\, duets are more fun—in this romantic Christmas novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber. \nHailey Morgan’s life has always revolved around music. She once had big dreams of composing her own songs\, but the reality of life has led her to working as an assistant high school band teacher in Portland\, Oregon. As the holidays approach\, Hailey dreads the annual tradition of Christmas with her meddling family\, where she’ll have to play nice while dodging their traditional expectations. \nWhen Hailey’s close friend offers her family’s empty cabin for a rejuvenating solo retreat\, Hailey finally decides to do something to make herself happy. However\, her arrival in small-town Podunk\, Washington\, is anything but peaceful when she discovers the cabin is occupied by several wild animals. Luckily\, Jay\, the mayor’s son—who happens to be an incredibly charming former musician—is more than willing to help. \nSoon Hailey and Jay are nearly inseparable\, chopping down and decorating a Christmas tree\, sipping hot cocoa in front of a cozy fire\, and best of all\, playing music together. Jay’s encouragement and feedback inspire Hailey to believe she might succeed as a songwriter after all. But even in her snow-dusted oasis\, family holiday drama still finds Hailey\, threatening her newfound peace and confidence\, while she realizes Jay might be more than he presents himself to be. Suddenly her Christmas paradise has become a winter storm and Hailey must weather through the challenges to stand up for herself and embrace the holiday spirit. \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required. Open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Club @ The Homestead
DESCRIPTION:The First Ladies by Marie Benedict \nA novel about the extraordinary partnership between First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune—an unlikely friendship that changed the world\, from the New York Times bestselling authors of the Good Morning America Book Club pick The Personal Librarian . \nThe daughter of formerly enslaved parents\, Mary McLeod Bethune refuses to back down as white supremacists attempt to thwart her work. She marches on as an activist and an educator\, and as her reputation grows she becomes a celebrity\, revered by titans of business and recognized by U.S. Presidents. Eleanor Roosevelt herself is awestruck and eager to make her acquaintance. Initially drawn together because of their shared belief in women’s rights and the power of education\, Mary and Eleanor become fast friends confiding their secrets\, hopes and dreams—and holding each other’s hands through tragedy and triumph. \nWhen Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected president\, the two women begin to collaborate more closely\, particularly as Eleanor moves toward her own agenda separate from FDR\, a consequence of the devastating discovery of her husband’s secret love affair. Eleanor becomes a controversial First Lady for her outspokenness\, particularly on civil rights. And when she receives threats because of her strong ties to Mary\, it only fuels the women’s desire to fight together for justice and equality. \nThis is the story of two different\, yet equally formidable\, passionate\, and committed women\, and the way in which their singular friendship helped form the foundation for the modern civil rights movement. \nCopies are available through the library system. \nNo registration is required. Open to the public. \n
